Alpha Tec : Watermarking : Polymark

Features

Watermark for copyright protection
When a user purchases POLYMARK for copyright protection applications, he gets a unique private key that identifies him as copyright owner or as a person having certain legal rights on the material. This key is embedded in the enterprise and private editions of POLYMARK during purchase. The private key is used to generate an invisible watermark that will be embedded in the vectorial graphic or will be detected in an image being suspected for theft or illegal copying. This watermark can neither be removed by a pirate, without severe quality degradation or geographic accuracy nor can be detected without the knowledge of the private key. Watermark detection is very fast and can be used to avoid time consuming graphics or map file searches in the owner’s data base of legally deposited files.

Implementation
POLYMARK is a multiple document interface (MDI) Windows (Win32 architecture) application. It is totally coded in C++ programming language by making extensive use of MFC libraries. All operations are executed through menu commands and dialogs which ensure the easiness of its user interface. Each digital vectorial image is displayed as an independent window frame (document) inside the application’s workspace. A watermark casting or detection operation is executed on the currently active (displayed) image.

Multiple file operations
POLYMARK can perform batch processing file operations, i.e. watermark casting/detection on many vectorial files at a time. The user can embed or detect the watermark in an entire set of vectorial images that reside in a selected directory using the same watermark embedding/detection options.

Supported formats
The following formats are supported by POLYMARK:

ESRI: Shapefile format. ESRI shapefile standard defines four different basic kinds of data, and any ESRI shapefile defines a layer holding data of one of these kinds:

POLYLINE: An ordered set of vertices, defining a polygonal line such as a river.
POLYGON: It is an ordered set of at least four vertices, defining a closed shape.
POINT: For example, for locating cities. This kind of layers cannot be watermarked.
MULTIPOINT: A set of points with no specific relationship. Not watermarkable.

There are more kinds of data, derived from these four, (for 3D data, or 2D data plus an attribute), that will not be watermarked. Is not a serious problem, as crucial information is represented usually by polylines and polygons.

Text files: As a simple way to define polygons, POLYMARK can also handle text files. Only one polygon can be described in a file. The polygonal data has to be stored in two rows, each vertex (x,y) in a different line, and the coordinates separated by blank spaces, tabulations, or commas (CSV). Float values are allowed. Vertices should be ordered.
